Sokoban beta versions

Development and beta versions of Sokoban for the Mac.

Warning: This is not finished software. It will crash. (It probably won't erase your hard drive, though). Run it only on copies of your levels and score files. Make sure you save your work in any other programs that might be open. You have been warned! If you have MacsBug installed during a crash, feel free to send me a stack trace or a stdlog (type "stdlog" when MacsBug comes up, then "es" to exit to the Finder).

Despite the warning, the parts of Sokoban that I have tested work and don't crash. Basic play is OK: you can move, undo, redo, and solve levels without much trouble. I think temporary save and restore also work. As long as you don't do anything unexpected, you probably won't have much trouble.

Current development version

Download version 3.0d2 Changes since 3.0d1:

• More graphics included.
• Undo and Redo buttons in the main window
• Beginning of multiple-high-score support (saves solutions for levels you complete and converts version 2.4 high scores)
• Can play external level sets (ones you create yourself or download from the levels page)
• Won't try to activate a debugger when you don't have one

Previous development versions

Version 3.0d1 (now obsolete) Features:

• Resizable main window with small, medium, or large graphics.
• Can handle larger levels (50 by 30 right now).
• Customizable graphics. (Currently requires ResEdit). Look at the PICT resource for format. Either modify it directly, or duplicate it and create an LIMS (Level IMageS) resource to go with your modifications. Ask me for more info if you're interested.
• More statistics. Keeps track of total number of attempts at each level and the total time on each level. I'll probably add more things as I think of them.

Other plans

I'd like to put together a list of the best known scores for each level and keep track of more scores for each person. It would be nice to have more sets of graphics available and possibly more sets of sounds. If you come up with anything, let me know.

I'm also debating making version 3 shareware to help make up for the considerable time I have spent developing this program. I'll give free registrations to anyone who supplies good suggestions, sounds, graphics, or levels during the development period. At the moment, just finding bugs in the development versions isn't enough for a free registration; I already know about quite a few that I haven't gotten around to fixing yet.

By the way, calling software a "beta version" means it's almost complete (there won't be any new features added before release, just bugfixes). Development versions (such as the one you can download here) haven't been tested much and have many incomplete, broken, and missing features.
